We are looking for responsible volunteers who are out-going, open-minded and non-judgmental. Active listening skills, the ability to take initiative, and maturity are some of the qualities needed to become a Drop In Volunteer. The Drop In is open Monday from 12pm to 9pm (afternoon and evening shifts), and Tuesday to Thursday from 12 to 5pm. A minimum six month commitment is required.

Education/Prevention Department Volunteer

What you do Skills you need Hours and Commitment Current Availability
EP volunteers form a team of dedicated individuals who are responsible, with the guidance and assistance of the HIV Educator, for facilitating our interactive workshops ("HIV 101"; "Safer Sex"; "Body Art", and "Relationships") in high schools and with community groups. Facilitation is always done in pairs, so teamwork is an important part of this position. EP volunteers are also responsible for helping with administrative office tasks, and with research and development of the workshops when necessary. EP volunteers also staff informational kiosks at community and cultural events. We are looking for responsible, energetic, and open-minded volunteers who enjoy working with people, and are ready to make a serious commitment to ACCM's work. There is a mandatory training for EP volunteers - this interactive training is between 20 and 30 hours long, and aims to provide volunteers with the necessary skills and information to present workshops and work effectively with their co-facilitator. The training is a big commitment, and is very important. Before applying to be an EP volunteer, you need to consider seriously if you are ready to devote this much time to ACCM. Typically, we run the training in the fall and spring. The training is a serious time commitment. Once the training is completed, all volunteers are expected to attend a monthly "EP Team Meeting" (scheduling of meeting dependent on when people are available) - this will be an opportunity for volunteers to get to know each other, have fun, and receive additional training/information when appropriate. The number of workshops going on varies seasonally (there are more during the school year); when volunteers are not doing workshops, we ask them to come into the office during working hours (Monday-Thursday, 9-5) to help out with the many behind-the-scenes tasks. Most workshops take place during school hours, though there are some evening opportunities. January 2009

We are looking for energetic, motivated volunteers capable of working autonomously on projects. Fundraising experience of all sorts is a definite asset, as are contacts with companies or individuals who may be interested in contributing to ACCM. 4-6 hours per month for a minimum of 6 months. The Training Team is the body responsible for running all of ACCM’s volunteer trainings. The Training Team, in consultation with staff, helps to design and implement trainings – its members are responsible for researching and developing new material and topics for training (based on staff and client needs), scheduling guest speakers for workshops, and coordinating the logistics of training (food, photocopying, room bookings, facilitation, etc). The Training Team needs volunteers who have a lot of experience in ACCM, or have attended many ACCM trainings, or who have experience with training volunteers in other settings. We are looking for people with energy, strong organizational skills, and a passion for sharing knowledge. Flexible. There are currently some openings on the Training Team. Be sure to review the “Skills you need” section before contacting the Director of Volunteers to express your interest.
Volunteer as a Support Group Facilitator

To become a member of the board, you have to show our members at the general annual assembly that you are dedicated to ACCM’s mission and have the skills to improve our work. 5-10 hours per month for a minimum 1-2 years Please contact the Director of Volunteers if you are interested.
Social Events Volunteer

Buyers’ Club Volunteer

Our food and vitamins co-operative gets more than 60 people each month to work together to stretch their food budget. That’s Buyers’ Club and it is booming! Volunteers for the Buyers’ Club food co-op can get involved by helping us with transportation, sorting, and repackaging of donated food products, setting up on distribution day, and looking at different fundraising opportunities. Bilingualism is strongly recommended. Varies depending on responsibilities. Presently, opportunities are available in this area.
Office Outreach Volunteer
What you do Skills you need Hours and Commitment Current Availability
You will go to health clinics, pharmacies, hospitals, and other health care settings to distribute information about ACCM’s resources. The program’s goal is to ensure that other organisations know about our services and can access them. Volunteers will be responsible for making initial contact with potential outreach sites, arranging and completing the delivery of materials, and doing follow-up with the organisations. Bilingualism is a must. Volunteers should also be mobile (having access to a vehicle or a metro pass would be an asset) and motivated. This is a short-term project. Volunteers must be available during office hours (Monday-Thursday, 9-5). Presently, opportunities are available in this area.
Transport Volunteer
What you do Skills you need Hours and Commitment Current Availability
Occasionally, we need larger things (such as furniture or office supplies) transported. As it is, ACCM must sometimes pass up useful donations due to our lack of transport. If you have access to a van or truck of some variety, you could help change that! All you need is access to a large vehicle, and a valid driver’s license. Flexible timing – we can work around your schedule. This would be an ‘on-call’ volunteer task, as opposed to a regular one. Please note: we can reimburse for accumulated mileage (to pay for gas). Presently, opportunities are available in this area.
