List of Programs and Services
provided by the Drop In Resource Centre:
- The Drop In offers
a "safe space" where people can connect with others
who are living in similar situations. Clients can maintain
friendships and contacts while providing peer support.
- An on-site
kitchen for food and beverages, which should reflect good
nutritional habits, to encourage clients to be more aware
of their own nutritional needs.
- A small recreational
reading library in the living room as well as written resources
displayed throughout the Centre, providing community and HIV/AIDS
information. HIV/AIDS specific magazines such as POZ, Arts
& Understanding (A&U) and Living + are available (for
free) as well.
- The "Poz
Sexuality Library" is a special library within the Centre,
containing books and videos on the subject of sexuality. The
library is clearly marked as such and members must leave a
$5.00 deposit in order to take a book out for a two-week period.
- Social events
and activities such as the Skating Party, the Holiday Open
House and summer BBQs. The Centre also helps organize "Positive
Mingles" off-site throughout the year. All members are
encouraged to participate and help organize these events to
ensure their continuation. Drop In social events are open
to all members of ACCM.
- The Store: Access
to useful items like clothing, small appliances, knick-knacks,
etc. with our on-going garage sale in the storage space (take
whatever and however much you’d like for only $2.00,
except for the “prices as marked” table). Everyone
is welcome to shop at and donate to "The Sale."
- Health promotion
activities and informative workshops on subjects such as nutrition,
working with your doctor, sexuality, etc. as part of the Living
Skills Workshop Series (spring and fall). Workshops happen
on-site in our living room on Monday evenings. The workshops
provide a fun, informative and informal way of learning more
about various issues related to HIV/AIDS and the community
resources available to you. Other workshop series' have included
Budgeting and Computer Training and are offered as the need
arises.
- Opportunities
to discuss issues of relevance through the Monday night Dinner
& Discussion Evenings. A good way to connect with the
group in an informal setting. Topics have included: HIV/AIDS
and I.V. Drug Use, Goal Setting, Love & Relationships,
Aging as a Gay Man, etc. D&Ds are less formal than a workshop;
they are usually facilitated by staff or volunteers as opposed
to having a speaker from the community come in and speak with
the group.
- Saturday afternoon
bowling league for which clients pay a minimal fee ($0.50
per week) to participate.
- Free access to
gloves, condoms and lubricant to facilitate safer sex and
a healthy sex life.
- Free
access to a public phone for short calls; another way to maintain
connections that members have made at the Drop In Resource
Centre or to call medical and social service professionals.
- Access to leisure
activities, such as games (Scrabble, Tuck, cards etc.) which
allow for social interaction with others.
- Similar
to the recreational reading library, the Centre has a selection
of over 150 videos to loan to members for free.
- Access to the
ACCM newsletter as well as other information on ACCM activities
and programs.
- Information boards
containing timely information on health issues, community
programs and resources, as well as a board for job opportunities.
Members are encouraged to post information regarding any topic
of concern for other members, including events, resources,
or ads. There is a specific "client message board"
for clients to leave messages for each other.
- Buy, Sell or
Trade board, for exchanging goods and services or advertising
for things like roommates or things to give away or sell.
- Free access to
a computer, the internet and technical support (when available)
for things like checking e-mail, writing CVs, looking up the
latest treatment information or burning CDs. Blank CDs can
be bought through the Centre for $1.00, diskettes for .50¢.
- On occasion, free
tickets to events such as movie premieres, theater shows,
etc. when available.
- Access to
basic first aid care and hygiene supplies (bandages, tampons,
pads, Tums, Gravol, Tylenol, etc.).
- Supportive
counseling and crisis intervention provided by the Drop In
Director, the Case Manager and the Support Services Assistant.
- Access to other
client services through the Case Manager or Support Services
Assistant.
- Fabulous, friendly
volunteers who engage in active listening, run the Centre
on a daily basis and help to locate resources within ACCM
with clients.
