Our Mandate
To provide education and prevention services on HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, and related topics to the English speaking population of the island of Montreal.
Our Philosophy
Targeting our outreach activities.
Given the breadth of our mandate and the limits of our resources,
we identify and focus our efforts on specific "high-risk"
groups. This is done by keeping abreast of current research
and communication with other organizations such as COCQ-Sida,
CQCS, and RRSSS Montréal-Centre. Our targets are further
prioritized based on the skills and abilities of the department’s
members and partners, and the physical and financial resources
of ACCM and our department. These target groups are identified
in our work plan, and reviewed semi-annually with the submission
of Activities Monitoring Reports.
Building our outreach activities.
There are two primary, and equally important components to our
programming. These components work together to create an environment
that is both supportive and encouraging of individual behavioral
change.
Education : These activities
are often short-term presentations or kiosks that are based
on information about biology, law, and the social, political,
and economic aspects of the epidemic. Their goal is to challenge
discrimination and provide the community with the tools they
need to create a supportive and HIV friendly environment.
Prevention: These programs
are often long-term, repeat workshops that address issues such
as sexuality, identity, self-esteem, assertiveness, autonomy,
and sexual orientation. Their goal is to provide individuals
with the tools to change unsafe or unhealthy behavior.
We develop all of our activities based on feedback
and our experiences.
Our relationship with the community
A fundamental principle guiding our programming
is the idea that HIV prevention is a community responsibility.
It is necessary to mobilize both leaders and members to take
responsibility for the health of their community. Although it
is individuals that change their own behavior, it is the community
that provides them with the tools for change and the environment
to support it. As a result, we work closely with a variety of
partners throughout Montreal to share information, experience,
and expertise.
